Shreveport Water Works Museum - A 5-Minute Trip from Interstate 20

 

The Shreveport Water Works Museum in Shreveport, Louisiana is something you need to STOP THE CAR to visit when you are traveling along Interstate-20 from Dallas-Fort Worth to Jackson, Mississippi; Birmingham Alabama; Atlanta, Georgia or Columbia, South Carolina.



Weekend Trip Along Interstate-20

While taking a weekend-trip to Carthage, Texas (an 45-minute drive from Interstate-20), we decided to take a day-trip to the Shreveport Water Works Museum.

The I-20 Stop: Shreveport Water Works Museum

The Shreveport Water Works Museum is a unique, free experience just minutes away from Interstate-20 in Shreveport. Before you enter the museum, take a picture of the unique and historic water grates located outside of the building. Then, take a quick look at the water tanks that are located by the railroad car. These are amazing! 




When you enter the museum, you will see a room that will take you years in the past. Make sure you look up a the ceiling and take lots of pictures! Pick up a map and say hi to the museum staff! 



There is also a water purification simulation from the American Water Works Association and Water Works Steam Whistle. Try these! You will remember these for years to come!



The museum is located in the McNeill Street Pumping Station which opened in 1887. This pumping station and its steam pumps were actually in operation until 1980! Make sure you have your cameras ready because you will have an opportunity visit see amazing rooms during your visit.

When you visit the museum, keep in mind you are visiting a National Historic Landmark and National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
