How to Save Money on Luggage – Tips for the Money Savvy Traveler
Travelers certainly wouldn’t get very far without luggage. Can you imagine having to wave your intimates around at the airport check-in counter or rest a pile of clean clothes on the bathroom floor of the train station when nature calls?
No thank you!
A solid suitcase or a handy carry-on bag will keep your belongings safe and clean, but purchasing new luggage can sometimes leave a huge dent in the wallet.
Wondering how you can get around the retail pricing?
Test Facts offers a solution, and it is one that all budget-conscious shoppers will love.
The Secret Revealed – Always Buy Your Luggage Online
Even the best bargain hunter can have trouble finding a good deal on new luggage, but not anymore.
Through their in-depth study and data analysis, Test Facts dropped a bombshell recently by revealing that you can save an average of $110 by purchasing your luggage online as opposed to visiting regular brick and mortar stores. And since 88 percent of all luggage manufactured is available online, it isn’t too hard to find what you need.
As you can see in the graph below, the average MSRP value of luggage is $285, while the average online price is only $175 – that means you can save an average of 39 percent when shopping online.

The difference is huge, and the data has many travelers realizing that they have been spending excessive amounts of money on luggage for years.
Balance Savings with Quality
While it is great to save money, you have to remember that spending less can sometimes mean sacrificing quality.
According to the the study, luggage that receives a higher volume of negative reviews also has a greater discount. Sellers do this because it is difficult to sell a product with lower ratings, and when the warehouses fill up with unpurchased bags, it is time for them to liquidate.
However, is it really worth your time and money to purchase an inexpensive bag?
If you travel frequently, then the answer to that question is, “No.”
You would probably end up spending more money in the long run due to the poor quality, which is why it is best to avoid the cheapest options.
The occasional traveler, on the other hand, might not have a problem opting for the lower quality luggage since it will not be used as often.
Always make sure you think long term when purchasing luggage because nobody wants to have to replace a bag a week after purchasing it.
How to Test Luggage Virtually
One of the most important parts of the luggage shopping process is testing. Being able to touch and handle a potential suitcase is important to most consumers, and it is something that they cannot do when shopping online.
The solution?
  • Read Customer Comments. The best way to gain a better understanding of what a bag is really like is by reading the comments of those who have already purchased it. Manufacturers want to sell their product, so of course, they will show you the luggage in showroom condition and rave about all of the wonderful features it offers.

Consumers, on the other hand, provide you with the good, the bad, and the ugly. Those who offer detailed descriptions and take the time to write useful reviews usually give a fairly accurate account of a product and can make you feel like you have “tried” it, too.

Take comments with a grain of salt, however, as each person has different expectations from their luggage and some might offer more insight than others.
  • See It In Person – Then Buy Online. If reading about a product just isn’t enough to convince you, then the next best solution is to head to a brick and mortar store to handle it in person.

You can zip the zippers, snap the snaps, lift the telescoping handle, and see which directions the wheels spin, but that doesn’t mean you have to purchase it on the spot.

Most brands that you find in-store are available online, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding them.
Brands and Stores to Consider
There are quite a few luggage manufacturers out there, and based on the study, Test Facts was able to make a list of the brands that offer the highest discount by percentage.

As you can see, Kenneth Cole offers the highest discount percentage (63.22 percent), followed by it luggage at 62.48 percent and then Traveler’s Choice at an average of 58.61 percent discount.
Were you thinking of going with an American Tourister bag? While they may have affordable off-the-shelf pricing, they rarely offer discounts and aren’t known for their high level of quality.
What about the stores? Who offers the best deals?
Surprisingly, Walmart’s online store comes in first, with Century 21, Target and Jet beating out both Amazon and eBags.
The numbers speak for themselves.

While it may be better to shop for groceries in traditional brick and mortar stores, the most cost-efficient place to shop for luggage is online.
